The Systemic Effects of Apple Cider Vinegar on Menopausal Hot Flashes

Let me start by saying I didn't believe it. But with hot flashes in the news as causing all sorts of heart problems  and dementia later on, I'm going to share what I can to help. A patient told me that she was taking apple cider vinegar for her hot flashes and it helped. Since I couldn't see the immediate connection, I reacted like a regular doctor and pooh pooh'd it in my brain. But, unlike a regular doctor, I keep a list of strange possibilities and pass them on to other patients as well as the things I think will work. My job is to help people get better, not to assume I know everything. So I passed on the recipe to another patient, as well as discussing the many other treatments she could do. I have a starter list of things I do besides hormones for estrogen imbalance. These are just the start, but it gives women an idea of how much they can do to affect their hormones. (For your ease, I've recopied the list below this article.) Here's the recipe: 4...

Can a video game tell you if you have Alzheimer's Disease?

A video game that works better at diagnosing Alzheimer's disease than all existing testing? Too good to be true? We need to start with a quick summary of parts of my book, The Dementia Diet . I go through all our existing testing and point out that it really doesn't detect Alzheimer's disease. Seriously, I was surprised as well. Even though I know better, I'd like to believe billions spent on big machines would make us safe and wise. As soon as they come up with a diagnostic hand-held device like they had on Star Trek, I know I'll just want it to work. But the bottom line is that the existing tests don't really help us. The most high-tech method for detecting memory loss is having your doctor interview you. So basically this video game might be better than nothing. Is it? The article I read from CNN starts off well . They had 4.3 million users of this video game. That's a huge pool, and impossible to copy in any lab setting. So how did they tell if t...

The Singularity and Dementia: When Can We Upload Our Brains?

I just finished writing a book on memory and dementia, and I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that we can do something about dementia. It's easy, straightforward, and we've only started to get a handle on it in the last ten years. The bad news is that we aren't going to be uploading our brains into computers any time soon. I know, smart guys in the tech world wander around talking about the singularity, the moment when computer brains will surpass human brains. They're wrong. Using existing technology, computers cannot equal a human brain. Not even close. To reach the power of the two pounds of wet, pink sponge in your head, we would need a thousand times the existing world wide web. All of it, in every country in the world, now a thousand times that computing power. Why? It's pretty simple. A computer is based on binary. An on/off switch like a light switch. It's either on or it's off. So a supercomputer is a huge room filled with...
